On Tuesday, September 15, 2015, in Lafayette, LA, after a courageous battle with cancer, Dr. Yuxin Ma entered into the presence of her Lord. She is survived by her devoted husband of nineteen years, Dr. Guolin Lai, her daughters Maggie and Molly, her mother Ling Luo, and one sister Yuhong Ma. She was preceded in death by her father.

Yuxin was born in Chengdu, China, January 21, 1972. She received a BA in English Language and Literature from Sichuan University in 1993. There she met her future husband and enjoyed performing in Chinese opera. After four years as a teacher at Sichuan University, Yuxin and Guolin came to the United States, where she earned an MA in School Psychology at Indiana State University and a PhD. in Instructional Technology at Georgia State University.

In 2005 the family moved to Lafayette where Yuxin began teaching in the College of Education at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette where she served as an associate professor of Instructional Technology until her death. It is impossible to estimate the influence she has had on future teachers as she taught them how to apply technology to enhance learning. Yuxin received more than one million dollars of grants for research in her field of expertise. She was prolific in writing chapters for textbooks, articles for professional journals and in making presentations to professional groups. Her colleagues describe Yuxin as “a top-notch researcher, an awesome teacher, angelic in personality.”

Both Yuxin and Guolin began attending the Chinese Ministry of First Baptist Church in 2005, where they later accepted Christ as Savior. They were baptized in 2012. Both have continued to be active in the Chinese Ministry, where Yuxin often helped to lead music and was a willing and capable translator. She will be greatly missed by all the members of that group.

The delight of Yuxin’s life was the time she spent with her precious daughters. She was a devoted mother, being sure they were in children’s choir, piano lessons, and maintaining Chinese tradition by teaching them Chinese language.

Yuxin’s indomitable spirit was constantly evident during the one year and three months of her battle with cancer. With Guolin’s loving support, she was relentless in her search for effective treatment and unafraid to try trail-blazing regimens.

Heaven is richer for gaining the presence of Yuxin Ma — excellent wife and mother, daughter and sister, teacher and researcher, Christian and friend.
