Counseling

The Department of Counseling (COUN) offers graduate programs in counseling that are designed to prepare you for a profession that changes people's lives. In 2014, the Department of Counselor Education received an 8-year accreditation from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The Counseling program is only one of four programs in the nation to receive this honor on its first attempt.

In Spring 2022, the Department of Counselor Education received approval from the Board of Regents to offiically change the name of the department to the Department of Counseling.

We offer a Master of Science in Counseling and two concentration areas from which you can choose: Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling.

The Clinical Mental Health Counseling concentration meets the educational requirements for licensure as a professional counselor (LPC) in Louisiana and prepares you to deliver services in a variety of mental health settings. Clinical Mental Health Counselors must be licensed as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPS) in the state in which they work. Licensure requirements may vary by state and counselors must verify requirements in the state they are seeking licensure. Students completing a Master of Science in Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling concentration are prepared to seek these credentials.

The School Counseling concentration meets the Louisiana Department of Education's educational requirements for certification as a Counselor, K-12 or Ancillary Counselor, K-12. School Counselors must be certified by the state in which they work. Certification requirements may vary by state and School Counselors must verify requirements with the certification officer in the state they are seeking certification. Students completing a Master of Science in Counseling, School Counseling concentration are prepared to seek these credentials.

Educational Curriculum & Instruction

The Department of Educational Curriculum and Instruction (EDCI) at UL Lafayette offers undergraduate and graduate degrees designed to empower you as a teacher. If you want to be on the front lines in schools and classrooms, we'll teach you how to place students on the path of success, from pre-school to senior year in high school. Our department emphasizes research and professionalism and leading by example — so you can demonstrate your expertise in both knowledge and practice, embrace diversity, and be committed to continuous professional growth.

Teachers must be certified by the state in which they work. Certification requirements may vary by state and teachers must verify requirements with the certification officer in the state they are seeking certification. Students completing a baccalaureate degree, graduate degree, or post baccalaureate certificate are prepared to seek these credentials.

We are the first department and institution to offer the Elementary Mathematics Specialist Add-On Certification and the Instructional Coach Add-On Certification.

The programs in the Department of Educational Curriculum and Instruction (EDCI) have received national recognition from the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics, National Science Teachers Association, Association for Childhood International, National Council for Social Studies, and National Association for the Education of Young Children.

Educational Foundations & Leadership

The Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership (EDFL) is committed to making you an educational leader at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Our coursework is focused on transmitting, preserving, extending, and challenging intellectual traditions. The Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership supports the department of Educational Curriculum and Instruction and the School of Kinesiology by providing the candidates with educational foundations, leadership courses, and a variety of laboratory experiences.

In addition, we are committed to pre-service and advanced programs, as well as University and community service.

Students completing a Master of Education in Educational Leadership at UL Lafayette are prepared to seek these credentials.

Kinesiology

The School of Kinesiology (KNES) is the largest unit within the College of Education and Human Development. The School of Kinesiology focuses on studying people's responses to physical activity and exercise, while promoting health and physical well-being. Because human movement is inherently complex, we offer a number of Kinesiology concentrations, including exercise science, health and physical education, health and promotion wellness, and sport management.

Athletic Trainers are required to hold a Bachelor’s or Master's degree from a Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) accredited Athletic Training program and must pass the Board of Certification (BOC) exam. Additional licensure requirements may vary by state to practice as an Athletic Trainer. Students receiving their Master of Science in Athletic Training from the UL Lafayette Athletic Training program are eligible for these credentials.

With a degree from the School of Kinesiology, you can work as an occupational therapist, physical therapist, athletic trainer, sports manager, exercise and fitness director, cardiac rehab, physician's assistant, and more. If you're pursuing a degree in Health and Physical Education, we offer the teacher certification.
