For over 30 years, Dr. Gerald P. Carlson has provided outstanding leadership in the College of Education. The strongest component of Dean Carlson’s leadership ability is to help others become better leaders through his guidance and direction. Dean Carlson has been a very visible, external advocate for both the College of Education and UL Lafayette. He has represented the university as the chair on many state committees. In addition, he served twice as the President of the Louisiana Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (LACTE). Dean Carlson has represented at functions at the parish, state, and national levels. He is well-known by all the superintendents in Region 4 & 5.

Dean Carlson has served in numerous capacities at UL Lafayette from Professor and Department Head to Associate Dean to Dean. Over his 30 years of service, the College of Education has grown to three departments and one school. All programs in these departments and school are recognized nationally. The Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) has highlighted the Educational Leadership program regionally as an exemplary program. The Counselor Education program received an eight year accreditation from CACREP. This program is one of four programs in the country to receive this approval on the first attempt. In addition, the School of Kinesiology has grown to one of the largest on campus. 

On November 13, 2014, President Joseph E. Savoie and Dr. James Henderson, Vice President of Academic Affairs, awarded Dr. Gerald Carlson of the College of Education with the title of Dean Emeritus.

On Thursday, December 4, 2014 the College of Education hosted a retirement party held in the Alumni House. During the retirement party, each department presented Dr. Carlson with special gifts to show their thanks and appreciation.

The School of Kinesiology unveiled the Dr. Gerald P. Carlson, Honorary Kinesiology Classroom on December 10, 2014. The honorary Kinesiology classroom is a newly remodeled state of the art smart classroom equipped with over $10,000 of new equipment, which will be used for the newly formed Graduate Program in the School of Kinesiology.
